Autumn’s Fate

When shades of night were hiding autumn gold
And chilling darkness traced the spine like fright;
A shadow danced until the morning’s light…
As waking eyes and rising sun behold,
Observe, the strain of autumn’s fate foretold;
The world beneath those frozen crystals white
From when a hand of stillness crossed the night
And laid upon the earth its’ bitter cold.
A flower, scarred by such a deathly hand
Will lower down the petals held on high,
To rest upon the frost that seals the land,
Along with fallen leaves so softly fanned
Across the hopes of warmth that slowly die
As winter’s breeze condemns the leaden sky.
