So Cold

I wake alone with mornings fire
Then reach to where you once would sleep,
But find a barren bed of mire;
I feel the chill and start to weep.
My heart has never been so broken
Has never been this worthless token,
Just shards and dust in trembling hands,
Just dying leaves with autumn’s brands.
They fall along a gale of sorrow
That comes to freeze my hope with death,
To still the mind and steal my breath…
I wake alone upon the morrow,
The bed still cold where you would lay
Before this fate took you away.
